The State of Illinois registers plumbing contractors and state law requires that anyone doing plumbing work in Illinois is registered with the State of Illinois or the City of Chicago.
To register, a contractor must:
- Provide evidence of general liability insurance, bodily injury insurance, property damage insurance and workers compensation insurance.
- Post a $20,000 indemnification bond (with either the State or the City) or a letter of credit.
- Have a State of Illinois/City of Chicago licensed plumber as part owner.
- Provide information on the type of company ownership.
The registration must be renewed each May 1st. The state must also be provided with any changes in business structure, name, and location within 15 days of the change. The registration is not transferable upon the sale of the business.
