This year’s outing will be a tour of the Leo Nelson Riverside Water Treatment Plant in Elgin, Illinois. This facility treats water from the Fox River and is the source of Elgin’s drinking water. The raw water undergoes a tertiary treatment process, including coagulation/sedimentation, lime softening, chlorination and filtration.
One gallon of Fox River water enters the treatment process along with 13 million gallons on an average day and about 24 hours later it completes a purification and conditioning treatment making it safe to drink. Kyla Jacobsen, Water Department Director for the City of Elgin, will lead our group through the entire treatment process while educating us on the history of Elgin’s various water sources.
Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes as the tour will involve walking both inside and outside. Immediately following the tour, we will enjoy lunch at a restaurant/pub called the Elgin Public House at approximately 12:00 Noon at 219 E. Chicago Avenue, Elgin. The bus will return to the Sheet Metal Worker’s Local 73 parking lot by 2:00 p.m.
